06_15_2012 Bird Intermission...Part I

Lots going on here at the house. I'll post some pictures shortly. Until then, I thought I'd post some fun photos Dave has been taking.

Looks out! Some are x-rated. :)

Our first three photos are of an adult House Wren feeding her/his hungry babies. There were five babies in this nest hole. They enjoyed some really gross looking grubs and spiders! Cute and hungry chicks. I imagine they have fledged already. The next three photos are of some Tree Swallows mating. Dave has been to this location more than once and noted that the Tree Swallows had been going to the Wren nest hole to peer in. The babies would get excited (thinking an insect delivery). The Swallows would look and leave. Then the Swallows would sit outside the nest hole and mate and act like they were anxiously awaiting the Wrens to vacate. We'll have to see if the Swallows haven't moved in when we go back. Note during the mating how the male grabs onto the head feathers of the female. They made clicking sounds during the show. The next too photos are of Phainopeplas. Gorgeous birds! These are not here in the Boulder area - wish they were. We have been watching a female Killdeer pictured here. She has a nest inches off a major path near where the Swallows and House Wren are. Last we saw, she has two eggs. Perhaps they are babies now! Finally, for this entry, we have a Western Bluebird. Not sure why, but any bluebird is always a treat to see! Free Blog Counter
