06_15_2012 Bird Intermission - Part III (and final)

The first bird, well, isn’t a bird! Still, what a cute bunch of turtles. Imagine having no waist. Sun bathing is very different with a leg stuck up in the air like that. Cute little guys! Second photo isn’t a bird either. Dave has been holding out lots of cool stuff! Check out this nice Moon-set over Boulder. This is no fooling with photoshop or anything. Just a big moon. Gorgeous. Moving onto the birds – the first one photographed is the ubiquitous Great Blue Heron. Wonder if he thinks he’s hiding there? A male Bullock’s Oriole is the next model. These fussy birds are almost the normal sound of trees in Boulder. Gorgeous and full of personality. Should start seeing some young as many are at nest now. The next bird was a bit of a puzzle, but we are certain it is a female Yellow Warbler (confirmed with others). Quite plain, but a beauty nonetheless. Here is a male Yellow Warbler in the midst of nest construction. Psyched to know where some are nesting! Maybe we’ll get a chance to see the chicks in nest. An Eastern Kingbird is found reliably at Walden Ponds. Year after year they are in the same area. Very sophisticated birds with their tuxedos and white tipped tails. Here is our female Killdeer near her “nest” (indentation in the ground) inches from a major trail. Silly girl! Another Western Meadowlark. Have you listened to their song yet? You should! A male Orchard Oriole! There is one place in Boulder to see these guys. I didn’t even know they were around. This bird was Dave’s first. Pretty exciting to find them! Second to last – a Pygmy Nuthatch! Fun jovial little guys. Not showy, but I still really like them. And finally, a female Western Bluebird taking some gnarly insect to her brood. They were very excited upon delivery. Free Blog Counter
