06_15_2012 Bird Intermission - Part II

Some more beautiful bird portraits! This is a photo of another wren (not the nesting ones on the previous blog). This pretty little bird was just begging for a portrait. And very cooperative bird! ook at these - the next two are of American Goldfinch. Ordinary? Yes. But aren't they gorgeous? And they are even more spectacular when they are on a favorite food - thistle. The thistle blooms about the time the baby Goldfinch fledge. Good eating for them. Thistle is quite beautiful? Well, the stalk is not very attractive, but the flower - wow! Even the Butterflies like them. The next bird is another ordinary, but I think pretty bird. This is a male House Finch enjoying a snack! Or using it as a toothpick (I guess that'd be a billpick). The next photo is of a Tree Swallow. This is one of them waiting patiently to move into a lovely hole inhabited by Wrens. Nice to see the pretty birds sitting. They are usually swooping around non-stop. Ack. A Flycatcher. Hard to ID! Still an attractive bird. The next three photos are of a real treat of a bird: an Indigo Bunting. These are unusual here in Boulder. I saw tons in STL. Dave got several really nice photos of this exuberantly-singing male! Like Indigo Buntings, he didn't want to come low. But he stayed up high and exposed. And sang and sang and sang. And scratched. He went down in a shrubby bush and made some 'clicking' calls. I wonder if he doesn't have a nest with a resident Lazuli Bunting? The second to last photo is of a Western Meadowlark. If you have not heard a Meadowlark's song, find it now on the internet. It's really as beautiful (if not more) than the bird itself! Finally, I close this second of three bird intermission blogs with a Chipping Sparrow. Handsome little guy was enjoying some seed at our friend's home. Free Blog Counter
