April 19 to 28, 2018 - Maui with Dave, Lori and Brad!

It may seem that I am never in these pictures, that I don't get to have fun, and that I work all the time. Well, it's largely been true, but here is a great exception. In April, we headed to Maui with our friends Brad and Lori.

This trip always includes fun birds, riding, beach, and just plain fun.

Here is a Common Myna bird. These are the 'starlings' of Maui. They are funny little guys!
This is a Japanese White-Eyed. To me, they are the warbler of Maui (they are definitely not a warbler though).
This was a lifer for us - a Pacific Golden Plover. Very pretty birds
Cool spider and web found on a walk.
Common Myna in flight.
This is called a Red-Crested Cardinal. However, it is not really a cardinal, but rather a type of tanager. They were friendly and bold little birds.
A gorgeous pair of Zebra Doves.
An anole of some type. Neither Dave nor Brad had known they show off their dewlaps like this!
This is the I'iwi, which is an endemic bird of Maui. There is a great bird watching location part way up Haleakala where we birded and saw many beauties.
The Apapane is another endemic we were able to see many of!
Seeing sea turtles was a huge treat. We saw some in the ocean swimming under water, and several munching stuff along the shore. They do have the sweetest eyes!
A sea turtle enjoying some shallow water and snacks.
A little Java Finch
We enjoyed watching a pair of Gray Francolins! They were very friendly, and had a very predictable routine!
We rented a road bike for Dave and he rode from sea level to the summit of Haleakala again. I drove up and stopped and birded along the way. I was able to get some fun photos of him riding.
CALLIE TOOK THIS PHOTO! Yes, every once in a while, I take a good photo, of a great subject that is in focus!

This is a also a lifer. The bird is called Hwamei and is a type of babbler. It is a common cage bird in China. So gorgeous!
Parent and baby Red-Crested Cardinal.
Brad and Lori. We enjoyed many meals with them. If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have made this trip!
Dave spent some time photographing the sea and scenery.
Sunset photo of the ocean
We spent a few days on the opposite side of the island. Each evening we sat on the beach and watched the sunset.
This beats work!
Another sunset photo.
Hiking along the shore
Airport beach is a great place to sun during the day.
Dinner on our deck.
We also went to Iao Valley State Park. It has some beautiful view and very easy hiking.
Dave rode the western end of the island as well.
Typical view in Maui
Enjoying dinner

Prepping for a ride!
The summit of Haleakala!

Funny sign near the hotel
Watching crabs
The trip ended with a brutal night sleeping in the San Francisco airport. Not fun. this may be Dave's favorite photo of the trip. He still cracks up when he looks at it! But the trip was worth it.
