7-31-09 to 8-01-09 Off to our Sierra Mountains Roadtrip

We got up and loaded and prepped the fifth wheel. We hit the road at about 3pm – not early enough to miss the masses racing out of Denver to the mountains. Traffic was thick! We ran into some rain and sleet up high, but in general, the drive was happily uneventful. We bivied in a nice spot in Green River CO.

We were up early the next day to finish the long trip to the Sierras. As we got closer and closer to the Sierras, the views become more and more beautiful. You can see Dave admiring the views while driving. Ha!

We arrived outside of Tuolumne Meadows, just east of Lee Vining a bit closer to dark than we’d hoped. The bivy spots here were very soft pumice – a bad place for the trailer. Given this, we ended up sleeping at the historical marker/parking lot for Mono Mills. You can read more about this "ghost town" at: http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/ca/monomills.html. Staying here made for a very quiet night of sleep.

One thing we’ve learned with the fifth wheel is that one is rarely bothered. We guess that the law just assumes anyone in trailer or motor home is a harmless elderly couple. If we were in the car sleeping, we are certain we’d be awakened and asked to move along. Weird.
