07_18_2012 Bird photos, Part I

Dave has taken lots of really excellent bird photos lately. Thought I'd post many of them. The first bird is a male Lesser Goldfinch. These little birds are feisty  - far feistier than one would expect given their tiny size. Great shot of one feeding out at Weldon Ponds.
So this bird is a bit of a mystery. Dave found a tree full of Yellow-Breasted Chats. Among them were birds like this. We think this is a juvenile Yellow-Breasted Chat, yet our research shows them all with yellow breasts. Is this photo of one before a molt to yellow? Or is this someone else? We are going to ask an ornithology birding friend. Cute bird either way.
This is a Blue Grosbeak. They are pretty uncommon in the area. Very cool Dave got to not only see this one, but photograph it! I've not seen one in the Boulder area myself...jealous!
The ubiquitous Spotted Towhee. They are everywhere here - there is even a "Towhee Trail" in town. Common or not, they are striking birds with their red eyes and cool coloring.
Plus another really fun thing about Spotted Towhees is they are exuberant singers. Rare is the day to head outside and not see one in the top of a bush or tree singing his heart out!
A favorite - a Yellow Breasted Chat. It's nice to get a photograph of one since they spend most of their time hiding in bushes making weird noises....they really do!
The next four photographs are of a young male Downy Woodpecker. There are so many baby birds outside now - it's just awesome. I'm referring to the backporch and Baby Bird Palooza!  This young male was investigating and feeding on a yucca plant. The next four terrific photos show what a great subject he was.

This cool and curious bird is a Green-Tailed Towhee. We don't have them in the Boulder area - this photo came from Southern Idaho during our City of Rocks trip (photos forthcoming).  Looks like someone has been overpreening this cutie!
Another terrific photo of  Yellow-Breasted Chat. When will Dave publish another book of these great photos?
And finally, for this blog, A Gray Catbird.  I love these birds. They too make a lot of weird noises - one of them sounding like a cat's meow. Dave got this photo of one at the South Mesa Trailhead.
