10_05_09 International Association of Chiefs of Police

There are just so many ways that I am a dweeb. One of them is that I really love the International Association of Chiefs of Police. It is such a cool organization that has done so much for law enforcement.

Some history from the IACP's website: "Since 1893, the International Association of Chiefs of Police has been serving the needs of the law enforcement community. Throughout those past 100-plus years, we have been launching historically acclaimed programs, conducting ground-breaking research and providing exemplary programs and services to our membership across the globe." This includes starting what is now recognized as the Uniform Crime Reports system (run now by the FBI).

Happily for me, the annual conference of the IACP is in Denver. Mary Dodge (colleague and the University of Colorado) and attended many events at the conference this year. It has been a blast!

Aside from the great sessions, the events room was amazing. Someone described it well as "boys and their toys".

"Wow" is the only way to described some of the toys there! The lines between policing and military seem blurred for many of the items there. Guns everywhere. Law Enforcement officers galore. Chief of Police from all over the world. We even got to meet Max the bomb sniffing dog.

Two especially fun things we did was to watch the Lexis Nexis magician. He was astounding and I still can't figure out how he did the things that he did - including getting a silver dollar under the face of MY watch!

A second hilarious event was at the drunken goggles booth. They had two sets of goggles - one that makes one equivalent to being just at the legal level of drunkenness, and another pair that puts one at twice the legal limit.

Putting the goggles on even makes one feel drunk! And attempts to walk the line produced lots of laughing. It is amazing how just putting them on makes it difficult to stand still. Great time!

Wow, I never knew of such an event! I have to say, it does look a little testerone-charged, but Max looks kind!
