03_29 to 04_01_2012 Rancho Palos Verdes - Birders! Part I

So, what of the humans on this trip? This blog offers some birders versus birds. The first photo is of a hyperactive man who is found in all sorts of terrain. This species is best known for making lots of faces and playing hard. :) Here he is on the beach - probably looking at Brown Pelicans.

The golf course was a lot of fun. Look up - see birds. Look over there - see birds. Saw very few golfers though.

This area really does have a wide range of terrain. There is a high section (where I'm standing) with grassy areas and lots of scrubby brush. A bird's delight! Then one can descend to the beach and except for the Black Phoebes, there are all new birds.
We made two trips to the Botanical Gardens. This is an exceptionally beautiful area. I know Steve W has a lot of great bird photos from here - it's clear now why that is.

Some of the beautiful vegetation - big roots and flowers EVERYWHERE.

Oh for our yard to be as beautiful as the display of flowers throughout the gardens. It's no wonder there were Orioles, Hummingbirds and lots of beautiful birds there.

Here's a photo of me, Maggie the Harris's Hawk and Maggie's slave. I forgot his name. She was a lovely bird.

Birding on the beach was fun. There are all sorts of super creepy things living along the shore line. Some - the ones with exoskeletons were too gross to look at much. I played with a few anemones...I'd drop a tiny pebble on them in the water to watch how their tentacles moves the rock around. Cool. The clam things - they were gross!

Back at the Botanical Gardens with the crew. Here I am with David (a super talented birder by ear) and Steve. We are at the Great Horned Owl nest trying to check out the owlets.

I can't remember what bird they were all looking for here at the Gardens. Nice photo of the crew!

Here we are at Harbor Park. This park offered lots of great bird and people watching. Here is Steve checking out some Egret and other waterfowl.

This photo captures David examining a very cool little and flat dragonfly on the fence rail. He got some photos of it and no doubt has ID'd the little guy. Jose and I are checking out the other winged critters.

After Harbor Park, we headed back to the Trump Golf Course to hunt for some Common Yellow Throat. They evaded us the entire day (for photos anyway). It was the next morning, before we flew home, that we finally got some photos of them!

Here are some Common Coot hanging at Trumps. They are in their formal wear clearly. :)
