12_14_09 Bunion surgery #1

Semester ended so I immediately got my bad foot worked on. Bunion surgery. Three bone cuts, some soft tissue tightening and loosening and a neuroma removed.

The night before, we took some 'before' photos. Plus, we had to write "wrong foot" on the foot that was not to be worked on. Some people think we accidentally wrote on the foot that needed surgery - but they are wrong. That is the "good" foot!

Dr. Shonka wouldn't let Dave in to take photos during the surgery so we have only photos of me before (blue bonnet), and after in recovery (silly grin).

The surgery took an hour and a half and went well. A couple of toes didn't want to participate in that little game we call "circulation" afterward so we stayed in recovery a little longer than expected. Toe four and five were white/gray dead looking things at first. They're okay now.

I've attached some photos of that day since several people have asked. I get the soft cast/bandage and stitches removed in about a week. We'll get some photos of that gruesomeness when it happens.

I have to say, the recovery has been fine. Very little pain. Not crazy from pain killers. Sleeping well. We'll see how this goes so I can schedule the other foot. Hopefully sooner than later.

Bunion is a condition when the big toe starts pointing towards the second toe, which leads to a bumpy formation on the inner edge of the toe. Person suffering from it, feels severe foot pain, rigidity in foot etc. One should take care of foot, should wear footwear that compress the toes. For more details on it, refer Bunions foot
