12_04 to 12_06_2009 Guest Bathroom Remodel

It is still a winter wonderland (aka frozen tundra) outside so we are keeping busy in the house. Our first big project is the guest bathroom. Aside from the floor, it is original 1980s decor and looks like it!

My favorite is the lovely yellow formica top vanity. Pretty...NOT!

Like any remodel, the house revealed some interesting secrets. First, we learned that the white tile on the floor would survive a nuclear blast intact. Getting it off the floor was the hardest part. Dave started confident and strong, but after two hours, only two 8x8 tiles had been defeated.

At that rate, we figured we'd (Ha! We!) have the old floor up in about 60 days and Dave will have broken every bone in his hands.

A trip to Home Depot to rent a Power Chisel solved this crisis. Two hours later, the floor was defeated. Our new hero is John F. Czerniewicz who on November 1st of 1983 invented the power chisel. Why is there no holiday for this man?

The vanity came out with a moderate amount of wrestling. And beneath it lurked many secrets. Toys...toothbrushes...mouse poison...and a 1989 vintage Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition. Douglas Thompson (who obviously once lived here) had hidden it away under the vanity. Wonder what the story behind that is!?!?!

The other secret revealed by removing the vanity was some creative plumbing. Who said plumbing is supposed to be IN the wall? Not the person who did this obviously.

Once all was out, we (okay, mostly Mark) got busy on the tile floor. It went smoothly and he lost no digits to frostbite while outside cutting tile in freezing temperatures. He's awesome.

Dave kept busy altering the new vanity to deal with the plumbing stuff. Once the floor had adhered, there was painting, grouting, and a new light fixture to contend with.

In went the vanity. And after that - I think it was everyone's favorite: the new toilet.

Yeah, you'd think it's no big deal, but this thing is CHAIR HEIGHT! And the flushing power - touted as "fast and easy" - is smooth. No more running toilet. It's a beauty and getting it to seat was loads of fun. :)

We'll do the shower walls next, but as you can see the transformation is great! The new room is awesome. Can't wait to get the shower walls done. We we do them, I'll add the finished photos here (probably in a month or so).

Enjoy
