03_19 to 27_2014 Dave and Callie's Big Adventure - The Bird Edition

Dave is on a hiatus from work. In mid-March, we hopped in the car and headed west for some climbing and birding.  Our first stop was a birding stop: Overton Nevada.  This area is on the shore of a finger of Lake Mead.  Lots of fun birds! And even better, we met up with our birding friend Steve Wolfe.

Up first, a Coot.  These are funny little birds and I admit to feeling a little sad that they got the short stick of bird design/color.  Still, they are sweet birds.
At Overton, we got to see some Great Blue Herons in nesting mode. Lots of showing off.
A Gambel's Quail posing for Dave.
A beautiful dark morph Red-Tailed Hawk at her/his nest.
Song Sparrow
A small group of American Avocets
Black Phoebe!
Male Western Bluebird
Hooded Oriole. It's always a treat to see an Oriole.
Female Phainopepla.
A coyote popped out of the brush, posed, then moved on his way.
Male Ladderback Woodpecker
At some point, we headed out of Overton for our destination of Joshua Tree, California. Here we climbed and birded as well. This included a trip to Morongo Valley which is always rich with birds. Later in the trip, we headed to Palos Verdes as well.

Here is a Bewick's Wren
Black Phoebe
Common Goldeneye
Here is the Common Goldeneye going for a dive!  Pretty cool technique!
The rear-view of the Common Goldeneye dive! Great photo!
The Common Goldeneye showing off. Loving the water droplets on his/her breast.
Western Scrub Jay
Ash-Throated Flycatcher
Anna's Hummingbird
While at Morongo Valley, a man showed up with his two year old female Red-Tailed Hawk. He will be fostering her until she can be re-released into the wild.
