4/24/09 - Shut down on Eagle Dance

Today is Clover’s 12th birthday. I hope she is having fun at home. I sure do miss the birds when we are gone. Too bad Henri was such a piece of work on the last trip - they could have been here with us.

Our initial goal of the day was to do the grueling hike to Eagle Dance and climb it. We started it, but realized quickly that this was not a good idea. The wind was blasting on the ground and we knew it’d be much worse up high at the Eagle Wall. Dave has made this full hike twice only to be shut down at the base of the climb. Given this, we stopped and did some other unplanned routes. The first route is an easy but classic that usually has climbers all over it – Johnny Vegas!!! There was not a person was around, so off we went. This climb proved to be a fun jug haul!

After rapping, we thrashed through the Manzanita brush and got to the base of a climb that only has one star in the book – Solar Flare.

Solar Flare has five pitches, though it appears that the last one isn’t that interesting. So, we did the first four pitches. It was a fun climb with two clear cruxes (roofs). All in all, it was a nice climb. After rapping, it was time to head back.

One goal on this trip to Red Rocks was for Dave to do all new climbs. Though we didn’t get to Eagle Dance, the two unplanned routes were also new to him. So far, so good.
