7/11/08 - Leisure Baron Living - Aspen Day 1

Dave and I worked a bit today, then loaded the truck for our next adventure. It had been about three days since being home so travel was needed. This trip, we headed to Aspen, Colorado - home of the life-long leisure barons. We hit the road at the standard departure time - 4pm. The drive was quite beautiful, except that the air was still hazy or smoky from fires somewhere in California.

The drive included going over Independence Pass. The pass is located at the Sawatch Range between Aspen and Leadville in the White River National Forest. At its highest, the pass is above tree line at 12,095'. For those flat landers that means no trees grow here - not enough oxygen! And the roads are NARROW in many places. In some places, it is only one car width wide which makes for "fun" traveling in the Great White. It is the highest paved mountain pass in Colorado. (Mt Evans here in Colorado has the highest paved road at 14,160', but it is not a pass).

I didn't take any photos while on the pass since I was white-knuckling the dashboard. We did however stop at the top and get the standard tourist photo.

From this stop, we headed down the other side of the pass to Lincoln Campground. A bunch of Boulderites were there including Dave's good buddy Bob aka Bubba. We were all going to campout, climb one day, and ride the next. We arrived to a jam-packed campsite and a swarm of mosquitoes like I've never seen. We hunted around and finally found a spot to share with some other Boulder locals. We didn't come out of the truck much though - the mosquitoes ensured that. They were beating on the door of the truck to come in. Ick! We enjoyed a nice meal and hit the sack.
