03_27 to 04_06_2014 - Callie Flies Home; Dave Returns to J-Tree to Climb with Friends

Dave dropped me at LAX and I flew home. He headed back to Joshua Tree for about a week of climbing, biking and birding.  This photos is taken of a Joshua Tree in front of a well-known climb called Double Cross. Dave is setting the stage for  a really funny trick he played on our birding climbing friends.

Dave posted to the bird thread on the climbing site we frequent that he saw a Pileated Woodpecker at Joshua Tree. This would be a FIRST!

He reeled in some whoppers with this troll! I was laughing at home as I saw it. And I admit that it hooked me for a second. I'm still laughing!
Dave spent most of the week climbing with our friend Susan - aka Medium Sooze.  This cool patina boulder was at the base of the IRS Wall and was an interesting contrast with the storm to the east.

Note also the jackets. It cooled off significantly this week.
Windy. Brrrr. Cold on the summit, but nice climbing on the wind-sheltered east face below.
Windy summit team selfie!
Sooze scrambling quickly to the belay station.
A cool scene with blooming cactus and the storm behind. This was taken on top of the Echo Cove Formation where they did four really fun 5.10 face climbs.

Sooze coming up the top of a cool 10c - forgot the name.
Dave contemplating the next moves of one of the routes on the east wall of Echo Cove.
One day Dave met up with Sooze, Ed (from Boulder) and Steve.  They climbed at Rock Garden Valley - a place he'd not been before with lots of good routes.
End of the day team shot!
Sooze coming up the crux pitch of Bird On a Wire a very cool three pitch 5.10 route on Lost Horse Wall.
