06_2013 City of Rocks, Idaho - birds from the trip

Recently, Dave and I headed to the City of Rocks in the fifth wheel. While there we saw lots of birds among other things. This blog post focuses on some of the pretty birds (and critters) we saw. My hope is to get some other photos up from the trip soon. Mr. Chipmunk - who was quite friendly - welcomes you!   (Blogspot has decided not to wrap the text on the photos this time. Why? Who knows!!)
The place had lots of very handsome Green-Tailed Towhees - they may be the mascot of the City of Rocks.
There were also an abundance of Chipping Sparrows doing their Chipping Sparrow thing. :)
Chip chip chip chip chip chip....
We had some resident Rock Wrens as well. Some were nesting and fledged  a clutch while we were there.
We named this little guy Chippy. He would touch out feet while we were outside. Pretty cute!
Our handsome Rock Wren strike a refined pose.
Finally identified another bird we saw with great frequency: Brewer's Sparrow. Plain little birds, but full of song.
And a first for both of us were some really  beautiful Cassin's Finch!
Love the Cassin's purple-red head and perky crown!
A Mountain Chickadee finds a soft green caterpillar to feed to his clutch.
Nesting in the same Aspen as the Mtn Chickadee was a pair of  Red-Naped Sapsuckers. Their babies were NOISY!
Gorgeous birds!
Here is another nice photo of a Green-Tailed Towhee
This was the cutest just-fledged bird ever! You can see this baby crow is still fluffy vs. feathered. He sat in a tree and actually sounded like he was talking to us. Bizarre. It was cold so I know that it wasn't the heat getting to Dave and me - this bird was talking!
We saw this pretty Virginia's Warbler. He proved to be most difficult to get a photo of.
And a Western Tanager. A cute young male. One can't get enough of these birds!
The Western Tanager flies away! Pretty. Enjoy!!!

Super photos Dave and Callie! I think you saw more birds at City of Rocks than I have in the 6 weeks I've been on the road! Rats on missing you there, hope to see you on the road or in Boulder, let's keep in touch...
