06_30 to 07_01_2011 Tensleep Canyon, WY, Part I - Flowers and Rocks and Stuff
For the fourth of July, Dave and I hit the road and went to Tensleep WY to meet Ron and Kathy for some climbing and R&Ring. What an amazing drive! We saw the most beautiful and dense stands of wildflowers EVER. So beautiful were the purple and yellow carpets of flowers that we stopped to take it in and take photos.
As is always the case, photographs just don't do justice compared to what we saw there. Just simply spectacular. In addition to the beautiful scenery including snow covered Big Horn Mountains, we really admired the gorgeous shoulder on the highway and road riding this place offered. There is a 66 mile ride from Buffalo WY to Tensleep WY that includes about 5700 feet in elevation gain, beautiful scenery and wide shoulders. The route tops out at the Powder River Pass. COOL!
When we entered Tensleep Canyon, we weren't disappointed. There is endless limestone walls, a beautiful canyon and a raging river from the late snow run off. Gorgeous.
We went to the Ice Plant wall to meet Ron and Kathy for some climbing. They and their dog Bodhi were already there. We did 4 or 6 climbs in the area. Only two other climbers were around making a really nice environment.
My feet did well on some routes, not so well on other routes. I have come to the conclusion that limestone is just a very foot-unfriendly rock. Still, I had a great time.
After the climbing, we all hiked back to the car. We had to go past/through an area that experienced massive rock fall late last year. Apparently the area didn't even look fractured. Sort of creepy when looking at giant vehicle sized white boulders that made up a portion of the fallen section. Didn't want to dally in that part of the trail. Ugh.
We headed to our campsite in the Boulder Campground (funny, eh?) and set up our tent. We made some dinner, started a small fire, fought off the (happily) incompetent mosquitoes and hung out. It was a nice time with nice people.
