This beauty is a Red-Naped Sapsucker. We saw several in Southern Idaho. They make noises that make them sound like squeaky toys!
This bird is awesome! It is a male Northern Harrier - there will be more photos of him in the City of Rocks posts forthcoming. He had a nest nearby (though we never saw it - they are ground nesters) and did NOT like us on the main path. Nearly scalped us several times! Gorgeous bird.
This is a nest of five baby Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers in a nest! We watched the parents (primarily mom) feed them for several days then one day, poof! They were gone. We were able to watch them in a nearby scrubby tree/bush. SO adorable!
Here is mom (see her eye to the left of the little mouths?) bringing in some tasty insect (bleck) for the hungry babies!a
This is mom Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher approaching the nest with some gnarly insect.
Here is our friend the male Northern Harrier. In short order, this vision struck fear into our hearts as we knew we were getting ready to get attacked - and I mean you duck to avoid getting hit hard!
Beautiful male Lazuli Bunting at the City of Rocks. We managed to see lots of beautiful birds there.
Uh oh - here comes the Harrier and he means business!
Uh oh again.
He would yell a neat KA KA KA KA KA when he saw us (or others). It was our warning that we were getting ready to get it.
Here is daddy Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher! He had a slightly crippled foot (right foot) though it's not that obviously in this pose.
Here is daddy Blue-Gray again. You can clearly see his messed up foot. Wonder what happened.
Mom B-G Gnatcatcher. Aside from the Harrier, this was Dave's favorite bird I think.
The female Gnatcatcher greeting the male. Pretty cool pose.
And one more of the male B-G Gnatcatcher. Handsome bird!
