I taught an Intro CCJ course this semester. These are really fun to teach because the students are so eager and excited. Plus, it is the perfect opportunity to bring in a lot of guest speakers. I think the biggest hit was a recent guest - Ostermann, the ATF bomb (and firearm) sniffing dog.
Ostermann, Oscar for short, was named after a retired ATF agent. He was born and spent his first year in a prison. He was trained by inmates in a very cool program we refer to as puppy prison. Dogs going through this program are awesome, and the program is highly beneficial to inmates.
When an ATF dog 'hits' on a scent, he/she sits passively. Other dogs, such as drug dogs, often paw furiously at the scent. For obvious reason, such active signaling is frowned upon for bomb dogs.
Dogs like Ostermann only get food when they hit on a scent. So, everyday, Doug has to offer Ostermann opportunities to plant gun or bomb residue for Oscar to find.
The dog found some planted bomb residue in the classroom to everyone's delight. Plus, he hit on a student's backpack. She promised she had no bomb, but it did turn out that she'd been to the shooting range about 3 days before. Residue from that event was obviously on her backpack. She known NOT to take that pack to the airport unless she wants some extra exciting personal time with TSA.
Fun fun day and the students loved it too! Check out my extreme dweebiness in that last photo!
