04_22_2010 - Eldorado from a different view

Dave here... After spending many years on the cliffs of Eldorado, I recently went to there with a different goal in mind - interesting creek pictures. I also finally got a shot of the somewhat elusive spotted towhee nearby. I hope you enjoy the pics!

That water looks so smooooth! Do they still have the Eldo photo contest? You'd be a shoe-in! BTW, you may need a new bird book--the rufous-sided towhee was *formerly* known as the spotted towhee! Miaow!

After an in-depth literature review (see e.g., Rennison & Vaughan, 2010) the following conclusion obtains:

1. The Spotted Towhee (Pipilo maculatus) is a large New World sparrow. The taxonomy of the towhees has been debated in recent decades, and formerly this bird and the Eastern Towhee were considered a single species, the Rufous-sided Towhee.

2. The Spotted Towhee and the very similar Eastern Towhee used to be considered the same species, the Rufous-sided Towhee.

Heh heh!
