9/27/08 - More trash, birthday cake and laughs
Today we cleaned trash again. Happiegrrrl, Dave and I adopted a section of Hwy 41 between the Glacier Point turnoff and Wawona to clean. And clean we did. In fact, we cleaned so thoroughly that we brought in bags of old rusty cans and broken glass bottles.
To our surprise, we learned we cleaned an area of historical importance – at least to some people. Seems we were supposed to pick up trash, but not any trash that was over 50 years old. How we were suppose to ascertain the age of trash wasn’t clear. Good thing our tax-payer dollars are supporting people protecting rusty cans and broken glass in a national park.
After this, Dave and I showered and prepared to head to the Ahwahnee Hotel for my birthday dinner. This hotel was opened to the public in 1927 and is quite a beautiful building. To get in, Dave had to secure a collared shirt. After asking around, he found a blue jean button up shirt. He borrowed a belt and wore his jeans. He was jeans-man! It worked and we got into eat. I think I worried too much about our attire since the guy at the table was eating with a baseball cap on.
It was a fun dinner in a special place. We headed back to camp to find the usual suspects around the fire, the usual suspects singing and playing instruments, and the usual suspects hammered. Happily, we also found Nefarius (aka Randy W) there. I’d looked forward to meeting him for some time. Dave had been able to spend some time with him while in Fresno earlier in the year. In fact, it was Nefarius who introduced Blaine and Dave. We chatted a bit and decided to climb together the next day. I was looking forward to spending more time with Randy and his friend Matt then.
Another pleasant surprise around the fire was Fattrad (aka Jeff). He showed up to the facelift his usual gracious self. He brought cases of wine to share as well as some McCain/Palin shirts to share. I even caught him giving some love to A Crowley. Fatty also brought a birthday cake for me. It was delicious. Lynn L gave me a feather boa that I wore around the camp fire. It was a fun evening with a lot of fun people.
